Reimagining intelligence through context, not cognition

The Context Oriented Arts Network (COAN) is a think tank and practice network dedicated to developing and testing analogue algorithms—embodied, participatory practices that recalibrate how humans relate to themselves, each other, and the world.

We work at the fault lines of contemporary fragmentation: political, social, ecological, and psychological. Not by offering better answers, but by altering the conditions under which answers are sought.

From digital optimisation to analogue revelation

Digital algorithms forecast, optimise, and predict.
They reduce uncertainty by increasing computational power.

Analogue algorithms do something different.
They reduce uncertainty by removing unnecessary structure.

Rather than adding control, they subtract assumption.
Rather than refining identity, they loosen it.
Rather than managing complexity internally, they allow complexity to be carried by the world itself.

In this sense, art can function as an analogue algorithm:
a repeatable intervention that shifts how experience is organised.

Context-Oriented Arts (CoArts)

COAN develops and deploys Context-Oriented Arts (CoArts)—practices that work not on what is experienced, but on how experience is inferred.

Through participatory, reflexive, and embodied forms, CoArts creates the orthogonal shift:
the 180-degree turn from content to context,
from what is perceived to the conditions of perceiving.

This is not introspection or self-improvement.
It is a simplification of the internal model—a reduction in the representational burden of “me”.

As identification with subpersonalities loosens, intelligence does not disappear.
It redistributes.

Intelligence after intellect

As artificial intelligence surpasses human intellect, optimisation, and prediction, the comparative advantage of being human no longer lies in thinking harder.

It lies in attunement.

COAN proposes that intelligence is not fundamentally cognitive, but contextual.
Not the capacity to compute, but the capacity to feel, sense, and respond without unnecessary mediation.

This is intelligence that arises when control relaxes.
When effort drops.
When the self-model is no longer required to manage experience.

Surfing entropy, not resisting it

Life persists by surfing entropy, not by opposing it.
Most modern systems—personal and political—attempt to cope with uncertainty by increasing internal control and complexity.

Our work explores a different strategy:

  • Reduce internal representational load
  • Allow perception and action to function without a central owner
  • Let complexity be borne by context rather than identity

This is not withdrawal from the world, but efficient participation.

An invitation

COAN calls to those who have climbed Maslow’s mountain and found not a summit, but open sky.

To those who sense that intrinsic value is not something to be possessed, but enacted.
To those drawn to challenges that do not ask for answers, but for presence.

COAN is not simply a network.
It is a living field of analogue intelligence, activated through participation.

Engage

Visit our investment page to discover how you can bring your energy, insight, and resources to bear—through presence, practice, or partnership.

Engage not because you seek solutions,
but because you recognise the conditions from which something genuinely new can emerge.
